Historic hotel in Fiumaretta di Ameglia

100 years of history in Fiumaretta di Ameglia

Since 1923, the Antica Locanda "Il Pilota" has embodied a fascinating history that blends with tradition and the enchanting landscape of the mouth of the Magra River. This special place has been, for generations, a point of reference for those seeking authenticity, hospitality and the beauty of one of the most fascinating coastal areas of Liguria.

September 10th "Il Pilota" celebrated its 100th anniversary receiving the first "Historical Shops Plaque" from the Municipality of Ameglia.

The story

It all began when Luigi Giovanni Eolo Germi, known to all as "the Pilot," by virtue of his skill in guiding boats on the Magra River, decided to buy a house and take over a modest restaurant called "Miramare." However, his vision transcended the mere contemplation of the sea, and for this very reason he more appropriately decided to rename it "Mirafiume."

This dwelling soon became one of the first housing units in the picturesque village of Fiumaretta and, at the same time, the only accommodation facility on the banks of the Magra river.

Over the years, the Germi family has dedicated passion, care and dedication to this inn, transforming it into an icon of hospitality and catering on the Ligurian coast.

Prestigious guests

A bronze sculpture in front of the hotel entrance bears witness to the time when "Il Pilota" was literally taken by storm by Italian and non-Italian intellectuals such as Giulio Einaudi, Elio Vittorini, Vittorio Sereni, Franco Fortini, Cesare Pavese, Giovanni Giudici, Giancarlo De Carlo, Italo Calvino, Mery Mc.Carty, Dennis Mascolo, Marguerite Duras. During the summer these illustrious people used to meet in Fiumaretta, at that time wild and still far from the mass tourism of the following years, to enjoy the hospitality of the Germi family and taste the simple but tasty dishes of the local cuisine.

Usually after having eaten well and even better drunk, sitting in the cool of the terrace they spent hours chatting amicably but also discussing animatedly their work and projects.

  • The evenings

The evening continued on the adjacent terrace where people danced to the music of a small orchestra, perhaps ending with a dip at Punta Bianca.

The famous novel ‘The Sailor from Gibraltar’ written by Marguerite Duras is set in this very place and recounts that experience: ‘... an old man welcomed us and told us his name: Aeolus - Like the wind? I asked. ‘Like the wind,’ he replied. He spoke French...'.

Everything here has remained the same as it was then, or almost, and this makes it a unique and special place.

The Germi family continues to run the historic venue with its heirs, seeking to preserve that historical moment while continuing to make improvements for the comfort of its guests.
